September 4, 2018You use shampoo and conditioner on your hair to make it clean and to make it look good and you can do the same thing with your dog’s hair. Your dog’s hair has the same need to be cleaned as it may very well get dirtier than yours does. When you bring your canine companion into Doggie DoLittle we make sure that part of the grooming experience is a good shampooing and this is also something that you can do at home.
Don’t use your shampoo
Before you try it know that your human shampoo will not work with your dog. Human shampoo is too harsh for a dog’s skin and will disrupt the pH balance and the natural oils in the skin leading to itchy and flaky skin. Shampoos and conditioners are specially made for dogs and some use more organic using ingredients like oatmeal, aloe vera and tea tree oil. These can be sprayed on or used like you do with your shampoo and some shampoos are specially dedicated to treat a variety of diseases. Many of the shampoos available on the market are also tearless so they will not irritate your dog’s eyes.
Spray shampoos
Spray shampoos are sprayed onto the dog and should be left on the coat. These require no water, are extremely convenient and are designed to absorb excess oil from the skin and hair. It restores the shine to the coat and can help cut down on odors but does not offer the cleaning properties of normal shampoos. In fact these shampoos do not clean at all. It also should be used sparingly as the oils that it is designed to cut down on are necessary to maintaining healthy skin and the coat. There is some controversy regarding these as well as some are believed to cause cancer or are linked to known health issues so if you decide to use one of these use it with caution.
Special dog shampoos
The regular shampoo is used much the same way as you use yours. Most are gentle on a dog’s skin but strong enough to clean the skin and hair. That means they have the abilities to remove parasites like fleas and ticks and to rid them of germs on their coat. Keeping the coat germ-free can only affect your dog’s health positively. These shampoos are designed to rinse away easily since many dogs do not like to be rubbed excessively.
Dog shampoos can be formulated to combat many different skin ailments like inflammation or hot spots and others. Shampoos can also be formulated for different types of skin as well, so make sure you know what kind your dog has before buying. Perhaps the biggest benefit for the human is the fragrance. Your dog will not only look great and be soft to the touch but will also smell good.
