Long-haired dog grooming best practices

February 5, 2018Grooming a short-haired dog seems like it should be an easy task and for the most part it is. While it is a good idea to have your dog professionally groomed every now and again there are some things that you can do at home that will make your dog’s life much more comfortable.
Maintaining Shedding Hair
Like any animal your dog will shed some of its hair. A good brushing can help to alleviate that and prevent hair from being found in nooks and crannies of the house that make you wonder how it got there. Before brushing some owners also find that moistening their dog’s skin helps to make it go much smoother. A medium bristle brush (for smooth coats) or a slicker brush (for wiry coats) is a good idea for a short-haired dog with medium pressure going from head to toe over their body. Don’t forget to brush the tail and the paws too.
After a good brushing use a fine toothed comb to pick any loose hairs left over and to check for fleas or flea residue. For most short-haired dogs it is a good idea to brush them once a week as this will not only cut down on shedding but will also stimulate the skin. The more often that you brush your dog will cut down on the number of times that your dog will need to be bathed as well. Use this time to check for any irregularities in the skin or for sensitive skin. If anything is found contact your veterinarian for further examination.
Bath Time
Short-haired dogs usually require a bath every one to three months. Remember to use a dog shampoo as human shampoo can irritate their skin. A good checking of the ears to make sure that they are clean can also be done here as well as a clipping of their nails. For many short-haired dog owners this is often something that they choose to let a professional grooming service handle.
At Doggie DoLittle we have nearly half a century in the pet grooming business and know what will make your canine friend feel better. We also have the supplies to keep them looking great after they leave us.
