February 5, 2018The importance of your cat eating right
February 19, 2018Just like people your pets can be allergic to certain things and just like with people what you dog is allergic to can vary. These allergens can come in many shapes and sizes. They can be something that is natural or a product that you bring home with you. In this article we will go over what causes allergies in your canine companion, what symptoms to look for and some easy things that you can do to alleviate those allergies.
Can my dog have allergies?
Any dog can develop allergies at any time but they are much more common in terriers, setters, retrievers, pugs and bulldogs. Just like with humans allergies can be triggered from pollen, mold, weeds, dust, dander and many other things that occur naturally. Fleas and other pests can also trigger allergic reactions as well. They can also be triggered from some bad habits that their humans have like cigarette smoke and some of the products that their humans use to keep their homes clean. Allergies can also develop from the food that they eat, the medications that they are given and even the shampoo used when giving them a bath. Just like with humans it may take time to figure out what your dog is allergic to and in some cases those allergies can take years to develop.
Scratching and what to look for.
When your dog develops an allergic reaction there are some things to look out for. In many cases they will begin scratching the area where the reaction is taking place which will lead to red or moist skin as they scratch away. They can also chew at their paws or constantly lick the affected area. Their eyes and ears can become runny and itchy and like with humans they may start sneezing more. Vomiting and diarrhea can follow. If the allergen gets into their throat they can even snore as they sleep.
For some allergies, particular gastrointestinal ones, it is related to the food that they are eating. A simple look at the packaging will usually lead to the discovery of what is causing the reactions, like fish or chicken. Eliminating that from the diet may alleviate the issue but in some cases it can take time to figure out what the offending ingredient is. It is also possible that a different balance of ingredients can also alleviate the issue. It is not uncommon for a dog to be allergic to an ingredient in a lower quality dog food but is able to eat that same ingredient with a properly balanced dog food with little to no issues.
Are we going to the vet?
With any allergic issues it is important that your veterinarian examine the dog and they can perform tests and make recommendations. A flea control program may need to be started if it is not already. The human may need to also keep the house or their sleeping area cleaner to help remove dust and the mites that come with it. The dog may also need to be bathed more often as well or there may be some medications that can be administered as well.
